Tim Siddall: Artist of the Month - August 2013

Every month we highlight the work of a different artist or illustrator through the title banner of our monthly newsletter - Penorama. If you don't already receive Penorama, you can subscribe here.

Until now, only subscribers to the newsletter got to enjoy these unique banners, but this blog series is changing that. The artist of the month for August was Tim Siddall. Tim's banner depicts a drawing of a drawing and highlights the journey of his favourite pens from their Japanese factory to his London sketchbook.

Below is the design that Tim supplied for the banner:

And here is how it appears in the August newsletter:

Penorama Banner vol. 7

Who is Tim Siddall?
Tim is an artist, illustrator and musician based in London who specialises in comic drawings. That's all well and good, but we wanted to know more, so took the opportunity to ask him a few questions...

Cult Pens: Tell us a bit more about yourself?
I studied Fine Art and Graphic Design at Camberwell College of Art as well as working in eLearning for several years making animations in Flash. Nowadays I spend my time drawing, making music and looking after my 4 children.

Cult Pens: What got you into drawing and illustration?
Tim: I think the cartoonist Mordillo was probably my earliest inspiration. I loved the other-worldly, surreal landscapes and deadpan humour.

Cult Pens: What are your favourite subjects/topics to draw?
Same as above! Other-worldly, surreal landscapes with deadpan humour. I like drawing plants and buildings and unidentified things floating in the air. I love creating imaginary landscapes.

Cult Pens: What do you get your ideas from?
Sometimes an idea for a drawing comes to you whilst walking down the road or washing up, and it's just a question of drawing it. But ideas can grow more organically. I find if you make any kind of mark on a piece of paper, then a drawing will evolve around it, almost as if you are uncovering something that was already there. I'm working on an animated video for my music project, Flame Proof Moth (more on that later).

Cult Pens: What are your top five pens or pencils?
Pilot G-Tec-C4, Pilot Coleto, OHTO Graphic Liner, Schneider Slider XB, Uni-Ball Impact Broad (but it does run out a bit quickly). The pen I couldn't live is the Pilot G-Tec-C4. I think the 3 pinnacles of human technological achievement are the bicycle, the guitar and the G-Tec-C4.

Cult Pens: You mentioned your music project, Flame Proof Moth. You have written a song all about pens, when did you come up with the idea and how long did it take to write?
I had the idea about two years ago and initially it only took a few minutes to write but the song evolved for about a year before reaching its current incarnation.

Cult Pens: Has it had much success?
Tim: It's one of my most popular songs when I play live and usually gets a cheer. It has also been played on London's Resonance 104.4 FM

Cult Pens: In the song you talk about visiting the factories where your favourite pens are made, have you followed up on this yet?
No. I've not even seen pictures of them. Not sure guided tours are something they really do! I imagine they'd look like the opening shot from the film Manufactured Landscapes, but more pristine. N.B: While Tim's song 'Are you trying to tell me I haven't got a good pen today' did not make the charts, you can listen to it here).

Cult Pens: What advice do you have for aspiring artists/illustrators?
Turn off the internet!

You can see more of Tim's work below but you can find out more by visiting his site.
